Most of the time when we get stuck and we cannot reach our goals, it’s because we need an identity shift! Somewhere inside of ourselves, we do not see ourselves as the type of person who can reach that goal.
That can be a very frustrating feeling. You want to reach that goal, yet something inside of you is holding you back. If that’s the case, it might be time for an identity shift! Redefining how you see yourself, can dramatically change the results you are experiencing in your life.
Definition
Identity shifting is the process of intentionally changing your self-concept, the way you view yourself, what you believe is within your capabilities.
As you shift identity, you will begin to think differently about yourself, talk differently about your strenghts and limitations, and build new habits and actions.
Identity Shifting is a very active process. It’s not lying on the couch and wishing you were different. It’s actively choosing to catch your thoughts, reframe them, challenge your beliefs about yourself, and take congruent actions. And… it works!
“The strongest force in the universe is the desire to stay consistent with our identity.”
Tony Robbins
Inside - Out
As you wish to expand your life and reach new, exciting goals, you will slowly be manifesting a new reality around you.
Manifestation comes from clear focus on your vision, and taking aligned actions to live that vision. If you prefer the term goal setting & consistent action, that works too.
Identity Shifting is THE ultimate form for manifesting, and conscious creation. The reason for this is that reaching your goals always happens this way: Inside - Out.
Your Inner World Creates Your Outer World.
If this is not a concept you are yet familiar with, you might need to reflect, read more about it, or ponder. The reason it is inside - out, is because your thoughts guide your actions, and your actions lead to your results. So if your thoughts (inner world) are telling you, that you can’t manage something, then your results (outer world) will be poor.
“The person you are today you have practiced into being throughout your life.”
Robert Pardi
Core Concepts
While you are working on identity shifting, remember that it is not about disliking, or judging yourself. On the contrary, identity shifting works best with a nice extra dose of compassion!
Identity shifting comes from seeing the limitations of the past and not wanting to life on auto-pilot. It is choosing to live intentionally to create this new version.
Identity shifting is reprogramming your subsconscious mind to think and act differently.
Your identity impacts what you manifest in your life. To change your actions, behaviours, habits, you must first change your identity.
“Your identity is the most powerful force in your life. It determines your habits, influences your decisions, and predicts your future.”
James Clear
In his iconic book, Psychocybernetics, Maxwell Maltz explains how changing the image of yourself, makes you both happier and more successful.
In Practise
How do you change your identity? What do you do to shift your identity? Here are a few powerful tools that can support you in your identity shifting:
Alter Ego: Define your alter-ego (the future version of yourself), what that person thinks, how they act, what they have achieved. Really pause to reflect on who you want to be.
Choose one area: Changing your whole identity at once is not really a functional way to proceed. Instead, choose one area - for example fitness, or eating habits, or virtues (like kindness, honesty, generosity), or relationship (how you want to show up in a relationship).
Visualise: Practise daily visualising you thinking and acting differently and reaching your goals.
Act ‘As If’: Take action as if you were already that person, as if you had already reached that goal. This changes your vibration and the way you show up in interactions, this affects the way you think, feel and act. BE that new version of you.
Define core traits: What’s your new overall attitude, mindset, self-talk, body language? But also: what is your energy like? What do you read, listen to? How do you respond to life around you?
Reinforce through appreciation: Celebrate your progress as you start to transit into this new version of you. Show compassion to yourself, and appreciation for the journey.
Check in: Review daily how you have progressed on your shift, what changes you are noticing within - and the impact it is having around you.
The practise leads to embodiment in all areas of life. The more you practise and you are that new version of you, the more you will become it. Notice your progress, and celebrate the transition! Identity shifting is truly one of the most powerful changes to create a transformation in your life.
